Signed first edition of her breakthrough novel, The Golden Notebook
Book signed: "Doris Lessing", 568 pages, 6½x9½. The Golden Notebook, by Doris Lessing. (NY: Simon & Schuster, 1962). First edition, hardcover with dust jacket. Signed on title page. Doris Lessing (1919-2013) published her first novel, The Grass is Singing, in 1949, but her breakthrough novel, The Golden Notebook, appeared in 1962. Originally attracted to Marxism, she ultimately rejected the doctrine because it ignores the spiritual dimension of life. Her later works reflect her interest in Sufism. Lessing rejected a Damehood, but has accepted other honors from the Crown. In 2007 she became the oldest person ever to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Others have called The Golden Notebook a feminist classic, but Lessing rejects that description. Time included it on its list of the 100 greatest English-language novels published since 1923. Dust cover soiled and missing sections at spine. The book is soiled and worn at spine, top and bottom edges. Corners are all creased. The pages are not creased but lightly soiled at top and bottom. Tape stain to title page. Overall, a very good copy.
