The economist who shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Economics with Robert W. Fogel signed this First Day Cover honoring the one-room schoolhouses that provided the foundation of education for children across America
First Day Cover signed: "Douglass C North", 6½x3¾. First Day Cover honoring the iconic one-room schoolhouses that once dotted the United States. At these facilities, children of all ages learned side-by-side. Many one-room schoolhouses still stand today as memorials to these early days of the American education system. Block of four 30-cent stamps affixed. Postmarked Devils Lake, North Dakota, August 27, 1979, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Background of the "30-cent Definitive" issue imprinted on verso. Douglass C. North (1920-2015) and Robert W. Fogel won the 1993 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for reaffirming the importance of the research of economic history as an important method used to explain modern economic changes. He served as an expert for the Copenhagen Consensus, as an advisor to governments around the world, and as a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. North is also the author of numerous articles and books on economics. His final teaching post was at Washington University in St. Louis. Upper loop of the "h" in North touches stamp. Lightly soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
