EARL L. BUTZ. Photograph signed: "Earl L. Butz". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 6x7½ (one surface). Secretary of Agriculture under Presidents Nixon and Ford (1970-1976), Earl L. Butz (1909-2008) worked to dismantle decades of production controls, exhorting farmers to plant "fence row to fence row" to meet world food needs. He was forced to resign after it was disclosed he had told a racist joke in a private conversation. Butz had formerly served as Assistant Secretary of Agriculture from 1954-1957, when he resigned to become Dean of Agriculture at his alma mater, Purdue University. In 1981, Butz was found guilty of tax evasion and served 30 days in jail. As of 2011, Butz holds the record for the Cabinet member with the longest lifespan. Slightly creased at lower blank margin and corners and upper corners. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Fine condition.
