Appointment of a Justice of the Peace on the day of Jackson's inauguration.
Partly Printed DS: "Edw Livingston" as Jackson's Secretary of State, 1p, 8x9¾. Washington, 1833 March 4. In full: "I certify, That Joel Brown whose name is subscribed to the paper hereunto annexed [not present] is now, and was at the time of subscribing the same, a Justice of the Peace, in and for the County of Washington, in the District of Columbia, duly commissioned and qualified, and that full faith and confidence are due to his act as such." As Justice of the Peace, Brown's signature appears on many deeds of land in the nation's capital. Livingston became Secretary of State on May 24, 1831 and continued in his post into Jackson's second term. Chief Justice John Marshall administered the oath of office to Andrew Jackson for his second term on Monday, March 4, 1833, the day Livingston signed this document. Livingston left the State Department in May to become U.S. Minister to France (1833-1835). 1½-inch diameter creased paper seal affixed with red wax and green ribbon at lower left corner. Creased. Lightly browned at left and right blank edges, left edge is chipped. ¼-inch separations at upper blank edge and upper right horizontal fold. 2 pinhead-size holes at blank left margin, pinhead-size red stains at upper left edge. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso do not show through.
