The Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer signs his powerful photo of Louis Armstrong backstage before a comeback concert.
Photograph signed: "Eddie Adams". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 6¼x9½ (one surface). Eddie Adams (1923-2004), a Marine photographer during the Korean War, went on to win many awards for his photos of 13 wars and many famous personalities (from Malcolm X to Ronald Reagan to Mother Theresa). He won a Pulitzer Prize for his famous 1968 photo of South Vietnamese General Nguyen Ngoc Loan blowing out the brains of a Viet Cong prisoner. (Adams later said he regretted the political consequences of the photo, which figured in the 1968 US Presidential campaign, because it ignored the context of the Tet Offensive.) Adams took this photo of Louis Armstrong in his dressing room before a comeback concert in Las Vegas (1970). (The jazz great, inactive for the prior two years due to illness, gazes pensively at his trumpet.) Adams' widow made a special print of this photo for a fundraising auction to fight ALS, the disease which felled the photographer in 2004. Fine condition.
