ELISHA BAXTER - SIGNATURE(S) - HFSID 299999

ELISHA BAXTER
Signature of the Arkansas Reconstruction governor
Signature: "Elisha Baxter", 3½x2¼ Elisha Baxter (1827-1899) was an Arkansas State Senator who refused to support the Confederacy, was tried for treason, and escaped to become a colonel of an Arkansas volunteer regiment in the Union Army. Made Chief Justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court (1864), he served as Governor (1872-1874), a disputed claim that led to violence not with former Confederate, but with a rival faction of Republicans. Brooks was the last Republican Governor of Arkansas for nearly a century, until Winthrop Rockefeller won the office in 1967. Lightly toned at edges. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
