Richardson writes to thank Goldberg for keeping him up-to-date on education issues
Typed Letter signed: "Elliot". 1p. 8½ 11, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars letterhead. Washington, D.C., 1974 April 16. To: Honorable Herman R. Goldberg, Washington, D.C. In Full: "How nice of you to write as you did and bring me up to date on how things are going. I appreciate hav-ing a copy of your speech to the School Administrators and read it with keen interest. It is a comprehensive and persuasive statement of the actual dilemma which exists. It was a real pleasure to see you at Atlantic City, and I look forward to the next time our paths will cross. With best regards, Sincerely,". At the time of this letter, Richardson had resigned his post as Attorney General and although still in Washington, D.C. was in the private sector. Elliot Lee Richardson (1920-1999) was Nixon's Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, Secretary of Defense and Attorney General. On October 20, 1973, President Nixon ordered Attorney General Richardson to dismiss Special Watergate Prosecutor Archibald Cox, who had rejected Nixon's compromise to supply summaries of the "Watergate tapes". Richardson resigned rather than enforce President Nixon's order. He later served as Ford's Secretary of Commerce, his record fourth Cabinet post, from 1976-1977. Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased and toned at top margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
