ELLIOT L. RICHARDSON - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 07/11/1972 - DOCUMENT 79100

ELLIOT L. RICHARDSON
Richardson sends congratulations on a job well done
Typed Letter signed: "Elliot". 1p. 8x10, Department of Health, Education and Welfare letterhead. Washington, D.C., 1972 July 11. To: Dr. Herman Goldberg, Washington, D.C. In Full: "I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know how much I enjoyed the luncheon on June 26. Indeed, it was one in which celebrations were well in order. My congratulations to you on a job well done. With best wishes, Sincerely,". Elliot Lee Richardson (1920-1999) was Nixon's Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, Secretary of Defense and Attorney General. On October 20, 1973, President Nixon ordered Attorney General Richardson to dismiss Special Watergate Prosecutor Archibald Cox, who had rejected Nixon's compromise to supply summaries of the "Watergate tapes". Richardson resigned rather than enforce President Nixon's order. He later served as Ford's Secretary of Commerce, his record fourth Cabinet post, from 1976-1977. Paperclip crease and rust at left center edge. Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
