The Emperor demands from his Minister of War more detailed information about the fighting in Portugal (1811).
Manuscript LS: "Nap" as Emperor, 1¼ pages, 7¼x9 (front and verso). Paris, 1811 April 20. In French, not translated. To his Minister of War, the Duke of Feltre. Napoléon returns inadequate information about the Portuguese and asks for more details "regiment by regiment, battalion by battalion, company by company...." Handwritten note in French, probably by Feltre, on 2¾x1¼ slip of paper attached to lower left corner of first page with a straight pin. In full: "Received the 20th April to send/to M. Barnier". Seventeen days earlier, on April 3, 1811, at the Battle of Sabugal, Napoléon's General Reynier had held positions on the Coa River when he was attacked by three divisions under the Duke of Wellington. The British swiftly forced back the French, who lost about 1,500 men to the British 200. The information requested by Napoléon most probably relates to the Battle of Sabugal, Portugal. A few pinhead-size stains in blank areas. Fine condition.
