EMPEROR NAPOLEON BONAPARTE - MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED 08/10/1810 - HFSID 348006

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
The French Emperor whose tactical genius in the Napoleonic Wars created an empire signed this framed letter!
Manuscript Letter Signed: "Np", 1p, 71/4x91/4 in French with English translation. Dated August 10, 1810. The Emperor denies additional funds for the administration of the Domaine Extraordinaire, a special account of confiscated properties used to supplement the national budget. In part (translated): "Monseiur the Comte Defermon...My Domaine Extraordinaire is not rich enough to order that I...give more than 100,000f which you have for your Bureau's expenses...there is not much which can be done for more than 100,000f of work...." Formerly referred to as the War Treasury or the Treasury of the Army, the Domaine Extraordinaire consisted of confiscated property and war indemnities paid by overrun countries. The Domaine Extraordinaire was controlled by Napoléon, who insisted that he alone govern all the imperial finances. As of 1810, Napoléon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was at the height of his power; France controlled nearly all of Western Europe, with the Empire extending along the entire coast of the North Sea and the English channel and across to the southern tip of Italy. Napoleon's genius led to his advancement through the military ranks quickly; he was a general by the age of 24. Six years and several military expeditions later, he led a coup that put him in charge of France. In 1814, a coalition of European nations defeated the French Empire and forced Napoleon to abdicate. They exiled him to Elba. Incredibly, he escaped the island in February 1815 and gained control of France a second time! Three months later, he suffered his final military defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. Two dark smudges in blank left margin, vertical fold touches the "B" in Bonaparte. Otherwise, fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History Style: 34¾x23¼.
