Signed b/w photo of Ernie Rudisill sitting behind a snare drum with a
phone, a felt cap and a ginormous bottle of whiskey, taken when the drummer and
bandleader was with Sammy Kaye's orchestra
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To 'Frank'/Thanks for the/swell
food./Sincerely/Erny [sic] Rudisill Yo Pal". B/w, 8x10 overall, image
7¼x8½ (one surface). Captioned: "Ernie 'Cecil' Rudisill/Featured
With/Sammy Kaye and His Orchestra". Ernie Rudisill (1912-1997), also
known as Ernie Rudy, joined Sammy Kaye's orchestra in its infancy in the 1930s
and was featured as Cecil the Daffy Drummer in its comedy routines. Kaye
was getting less and less gigs in the early 1950s, so Rudisill and ten other
Kaye sidemen left suddenly in 1952 and formed the Ernie Rudy Band.
Rudisill's band got some plum bookings for a few years and even released a
record through MGM's Lion label and singles on Derby. The band dissolved in a
few years, but Rudisill retained the Ernie Rudy Band name and soldiered on for
almost ten years before disbanding the band. After leaving music, he moved in
auto sales until his retirement. Lightly toned, stained, creased and bowed.
Errors on negative were reproduced in photo. Lower right corner is rounded.
Lightly scratches (not visible head-on) and chips on image. Otherwise, fine
