Autograph Letter signed by the British General in 1962, offering to assist research on the Ministry of Defense
Autograph Letter signed: "Alexander". 1 page, 7x8¾. Winkfield Lodge, Winfield Forest, Berkshire (England), 1962 May 10. To "Dear Mr. Johnson", in full: "Thank you for your letter of May 7th. I shall be only too pleased to help you write your research work on the British Ministry of Defense and I suggest you let me know in advance what sort of information you require so that I can refresh my memory, keeping in mind that I left the Ministry of Defense in Oct 1954. I am only here over the weekend as I work in London from Tuesday to Friday inclusive. Yours sincerely". Of aristocratic background and a Sandhurst graduate, Sir Harold Alexander (1891-1969) fought all of World War I on the Western Front, twice wounded and many times decorated, becoming by war's end Britain's youngest lieutenant colonel. After organizing Latvian forces to repel the Red Army during the Russian Civil War, he rose to high commands in World War II, first in Burma and then in the Mediterranean Theatre. He was the superior of the better known Marshall Bernard Montgomery in driving the Axis forces out of North Africa, and later commanded the 15th Army in the Italian campaign, accepting the surrender of German armed forces there in 1945. He was the last Governor General of Canada (1946-1952), a popular and successful one. At Prime Minister Winston Churchill's request, he served as Minister of Defense (1952-1954). A Field Marshall, he was awarded the title Earl Alexander of Tunis. Paperclip stain at upper left. Mailing folds, not at signature. Pencil note (unknown hand) at bottom left. Light impressions from writing on a paper above this one. Otherwise, fine condition.
