FLORENCE BLIGH, COUNTESS OF DARNLEY
The wife of Ivo Bligh, 8th Earl of Darnley, pens her name on this clipping
Clipped Signature: “Florence Darnley”, 3¼x½ affixed to a 4x1½ piece of paper also containing
a typed caption identifying the signer. Florence Bligh (1860-1944), née Florence Rose
Murphy, was married to Ivo Francis Walter Bligh, 8th Earl of Darnley from 1884 until his
death in 1927. The couple met in Australia during the future Earl's tour with the English
cricket team in 1882/83. At the time, Morphy was employed as a music teacher in
Beechworth, Victoria. The union produced three children: Esmé Bligh, 9th Earl of Darnley
(1886-1955), Hon. Noel Gervase Bligh (1888-1984), and Lady Dorothy Violet Bligh
(1893-1976). In 1919, she was named one of the first Dames of the British Empire.
