FRANCIS B. OGDEN
As US Consul (1835), he signs a legal paper concerning a shipment of printed cotton from Philadelphia to Manchester, England.
Partly Printed Document signed in ink: "Francis B. Ogden", 1 page, 6¾x7¾. Manchester, England, 1835 December 7. Also signed "Laine Pearce". On a US government form for verifying oaths by owners of goods, Ogden attests, in full: "I, Francis B. Ogden, Consul of the United States of America, for the Port of Liverpool and its dependencies, do certify and make known to whom these presents shall come, that George Humphreys, before whom the annexed affidavit of Thomas Oakes hath been made, is a Master Extraordinary in Chancery, duly authorized to administer Oaths and Affirmations; that the deponent is worthy of credit, qualified to verify the annexed Invoice; and that the said Affidavit was administered in the presence of Henry M. Ormerod, who is duly authorized to attest the same." US eagle vignette above this statement. Seal affixed in lower left corner. Horizontal and vertical fold creases. Two inch split from left edge at center horizontal crease. Narrow blue ribbon shows above seal and goes through sheet. Soiled and toned. Accompanied by: 1) Affidavit, 1 page, 8x10 of signer "Thomas Oakes", dated 1835 December 5, stating that his Thomas Coates & Co, are the owners of the goods itemized on the attached invoice. Also signed "Geo. Humphreys" as Master Extraordinary in Chancery [a court official] and witnessed "Henry M. Ormerod". 2) Handwritten invoice for 14 cases of printedcotton, valued at £596.12 shipped from Samuel Comly of Philadelphia to Baring Brothers of Liverpool, signed "Thos. Coates" on December 5, and also signed on verso with an Autograph Note: "This is the Invoice referred unto in the annexed Affidavit of Thomas Coates sworn before me the 5th day of December 1835,Geo. Humphreys/Master of Chancery" Horizontal and vertical fold creases both sheets. Affidavit has small slits at horizontal creases. Ribbon passes through at the top binding hole. Lightly soiled and toned. Invoice has wear holes at horizontal creased. Left and edges are heavily chipped. Heavily soiled and toned. Completely separated from binding ribbon. FRANCIS B. OGDEN (1783-1857), a veteran of the War of 1812, was, successively, US Consul in three British ports: Liverpool (1829-1840), Bristol (1840-1852) and Manchester (1952-1857). He died in England and was buried there. GEORGE HUMPHREYS was a British Chancery Court official. THOMAS COATES, HENRY ORMEROD and LAINE PEARCE were English businessmen about whom no further information is readily available. Three items.
