NORMAN SCHWARZKOPF
His signature on a special bookplate affixed to a copy of his autobiography, It Doesn't Take a Hero
Book plate signed: "Norman Schwarzkopf", 6½x9½,530 pages. Affixed to a flyleaf of It Doesn't Take a Hero: My American Journal, by Norman Schwarzkopf with Peter Petrie. NY: Bantam Books, 1992. Hardcover with dust jacket. Norman Schwarzkopf, born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1934, graduated from West Point in 1956 and served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War, where he was twice wounded and decorated with three Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Service Medal. He had earned a justified reputation as a man who would risk his own life to protect his men. In 1983, Schwarzkopf was Deputy Commander of the U.S. invasion of Grenada. In 1991, he commanded Coalition forces in the first Persian Gulf War. The main coalition forces invaded Kuwait and southern Iraq on February 24, 1991 and, over the next four days, encircled and defeated the Iraqis and liberated Kuwait. When President George Bush declared a cease-fire on February 28th, most of the Iraqi forces in Kuwait had either surrendered or fled. Schwarzkopf was offered the position of Army Chief of Staff, but retired instead in August 1991. There was speculation that he would run for political office, but he chose not to do so. Fine condition.
