GENERAL RICHARD AIREY - AUTOGRAPH SENTIMENT SIGNED - DOCUMENT 81175

RICHARD AIREY (BARON AIREY)
Clipped autograph sentiment, with a printed biographic clipping attached
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours faithfully/Richard Airey", 4¼x2, with printed biographic clipping affixed in lower right. Signature sheet affixed to a larger page (6½x3¼) irregularly cut bearing ink caption. Richard Airey (1803-1881), a Sandhurst graduate, was commissioned in the British Army in 1821. Serving as Quartermaster-General in the Crimean War, he was accused of complicity in the infamous order for the "Charge of the Light Brigade" (October 25, 1854), immortalized by the Tennyson poem. Upon his return to England, Airey demanded an inquiry, which exonerated him. Airey was Governor General of Gibraltar (1865-1870), retiring from the army as a full general in 1876. He was elevated to the peerage as Baron Airey, a title which died with him. Signature soiled. 1 binding hole at right bottom edge of larger page. Ink note (unknown hand) at lower margin.
