GENERAL SAMUEL COOPER - LETTER SIGNED 08/13/1852 - HFSID 82242

 

SAMUEL COOPER. Partly printed LS: "S. Cooper," 1p, 7-7/8x10. Adjutant General's Office, Washington, 1852 August 13. The highest ranking officer in the Confederate States of America writes as U.S. Adjutant General to Major J.R. Smith, 7th Infantry. In full: "Herewith you will receive your commission of Major the receipt of which you will please acknowledge without delay. The oath herewith enclosed, will be filled up, subscribed, and returned." Cooper, born in New Jersey, was one of the few West Point graduates of Northern origin who sided with the Confederacy. He had fought in the Seminole War and was on staff duty in the Mexican War. He had first met Confederate President Jefferson Davis while Davis served as Secretary of War under President Pierce (1853-1857). During the Civil War, Cooper served as Adjutant and Inspector General. When President Davis fled Richmond after Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox, Cooper fled with him. Usual folds, none affecting signature, slight browning at folds, else fine..
