Handwritten letter from the Marquess saying that he will call for the recipient of the letter at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, signing sincerely. Extremely rare!
Autograph letter signed: "Yours sin/Curzon", 4½x7. In full: "Dear [illegible], Shall I give you a calling Saturday morning 11 am". An ambitious but vain diplomat, George Curzon (1859-1925) served as Viceroy of India (1899-1905) and Foreign Secretary (1919-1924), bestowed with the peerage of Marquess Curzon of Kedleston. The eldest son of Alfred Curzon, the 4th Baron Scarsdale, Curzon aspired for greatness throughout his life, becoming rather knowledgeable of foreign affairs with his extensive traveling. Most of his travels were documented in his writing and published in several papers and journals. Although he held prominent titles as Viceroy and Foreign Secretary, Curzon generally was not a great politician, and was usually focused on his desire to be made Prime Minister. In 1923, Andrew Bonar Law retired as Prime Minister and passed over Curzon in favor of Stanley Baldwin as the new Prime Minister. Upon hearing the news, Curzon reportedly burst into tears, and passed away two years later without achieving his lifelong dream. Toned. Corners lightly worn and creased. Adhesive reside on left margin. Stained across front, with heavier stains on verso. Fold in center. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
