GEORGE B. CORTELYOU and CHARLES H. GROSVENOR
The 42nd Postmaster General and the U.S. congressman from Ohio sign this slip of paper
Signatures: "March 3. 1899/ Geo. B. Cortelyou/ Secretary" and, on verso, "C.H. Grosvenor M.C./ Jany 11. 1899 Athens O", both in black ink, 6x2. After President William McKinley's assassination in 1901, GEORGE B. CORTELYOU (1862-1930), who had previously been a stenographer to President Grover Cleveland, continued as President Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary until 1903. Roosevelt was impressed with Cortelyou's expertise in handling the 1902 coal strike negotiations and appointed him as the first Secretary of Commerce and Labor (1903-1904). Cortelyou also served as Postmaster General (1905-1907) and Secretary of the Treasury (1907-1909) under Roosevelt before leaving government service to become President of the New York Consolidated Gas Company. CHARLES H. GROSVENOR (1833-1917) of Athens, Ohio served with the 18th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers in the Civil War, rising through the ranks to brevet Brigadier General. After serving in the state legislature, he represented Ohio in the U.S. Congress as a Republican (1885-1891, 1893-1907). Irregularly cut. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
