GEORGE B. CORTELYOU - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 04/06/1907 - DOCUMENT 291706

GEORGE CORTELYOU
Signing as Treasury Secretary, he authorizes a Supreme Court employee to travel to a steamer on a revenue cutter
Typed Letter signed: "Geo. M. Cortelyou" as Secretary of the Treasury, 1p, 6x7¼. No place, 1907 April 6. On official letterhead of the Treasury Department to C. H. Butler, c/o U.S. Supreme Court. In full: "Directions have been given the Collector at New York to issue a pass for you to proceed on the revenue cutter to meet the steamer 'Republic', due April 15. If you will call at the office of the Collector in New York, he will hand you the permit and give you directions as to hour and place of sailing on the cutter. Very truly yours". After President William McKinley's assassination in 1901, George Bruce Cortelyou (1862-1940), who had previously been a stenographer to President Grover Cleveland, continued as President Roosevelt's Secretary until 1903. Roosevelt was impressed with his expertise in handling the 1902 coal strike negotiations and appointed him as the first Secretary of Commerce and Labor (1903-1904). Cortelyou also served as Postmaster General (1905-1907) and Secretary of the Treasury (1907-1909) under Roosevelt before leaving government service to become President of the New York Consolidated Gas Company. The position of C. H. Butler at the U.S. Supreme Court is unknown. However, he was never a Supreme Court Justice. Toned and soiled. Mailing fold through center. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
