GEORGE B. CORTELYOU
The secretary to multiple U.S. Presidents signs this typed letter as President McKinley's secretary
Typed Letter signed: "Geo. B. Cortelyou" as Secretary to President McKinley, in iron gall ink, 1p, 5½x9¼. Executive Mansion, Washington, 1900 October 12. Envelope included. Enclosure addressed to "Mrs. William Whitehead West,/ Asheville, N.C.". To "Dear Madam". In full: "I beg leave to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 11th instant, with enclosure, in behalf of your son, son, Mr. William Whitehead West, Jr., for appointment to the United States Military Academy, and to say that by direction of the President it has been forwarded for the consideration of the Secretary of War." After President William McKinley's assassination in 1901, George Bruce Cortelyou (1862-1940), who had previously been a stenographer to President Grover Cleveland, continued as President Roosevelt's Secretary until 1903. Roosevelt was impressed with his expertise in handling the 1902 coal strike negotiations and appointed him as the first Secretary of Commerce and Labor (1903-1904). Cortelyou also served as Postmaster General (1905-1907) and Secretary of the Treasury (1907-1909) under Roosevelt before leaving government service to become President of the New York Consolidated Gas Company. A massive expansion program was undertaken during his tenure, which was noted for its focus on employee benefits. Envelope- worn, stained, and scuffed. Otherwise, fine condition. Letter- type transference in blank areas from being folded. Otherwise, fine condition. Two items.
