GEORGE S. BOUTWELL - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 12/07/1894 - HFSID 324373

GEORGE S. BOUTWELL
Important letter from 1894: "I am not in conviction to make any promises nor shall I be until I am free of duties."
Autograph Letter Signed: "Geo: S Boutwell", 1p, 8x10. Washington D.C., December 7, 1894. To Henry S. Allen, Esq., New York. In part: "From your letter of November 24, and this titles proposes for the volume which has been the subject of our correspondence. I feel quite well advised of your plan. So to the specific title that may remain in abeyance with the work is so far under way that its character can be better comprehended. Time, should and working might aide in deciding upon a title. You're still very much occupied in preparing for an important argument in the Supreme Court and in reasoning proof of a work on the Constitution. Hence I am not in a conviction to make any promises nor shall I be until I am free of duties. Moreover you do not make any reply to my suggestion as to terms. Very truly" George Sewel Boutwell (1818-1905) was elected as a Democrat to two 1-year terms as Governor of Massachusetts (1851-1853). Joining the new Republican Party, he was appointed by President Lincoln as the first Commissioner of Internal Revenue. During three terms in the US House (1863-1869), he was one of the special prosecutors appointed by that body for the Senate impeachment trial of President Johnson. He was Secretary of the Treasury under President Grant (1869-1873) until elected to finish Vice President Henry Wilson's term in the US Senate (1873-1877). He became President of the Anti-Imperialist League and served as a Presidential Elector for Democrat William Jennings Bryan in 1900. He wrote several books, including a well-respected treatise on the US Constitution. Toned and creased. Small tears at top and lower edges. Folds. Pencil notations (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine condition.
