The U.S. Congressman from Georgia signs his name in black ink
Signature: "Geo. T. Barnes/ Augusta/ Ga" in black ink. 7¼x2 clipping. George T. Barnes (1833-1901) was a Confederate Major and United States Representative from Georgia. A native of Augusta, Georgia, Barnes studied law and opened up a practice there before the outbreak of the Civil War. He served as a second lieutenant and major brevet in the Confederate States Army as a member of the Washington Light Artillery Company while simultaneously serving as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives (1860-1865). After the war, Barnes served on the Democratic National Committee (1876-1884), before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, a post he would hold for three terms (1885-1891). He returned to his law practice, and served as a University of George, Athens trustee for the last two years of his life. Irregularly cut. Toned. Left edge frayed and torn. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine conditions.
