A rare autograph copy of the preacher-pastor's poem, Violets
Autograph poem signed: "Geo W. Bethune", 1 page, 7x9. An autograph copy of his poem Violets. George Bethune (1805-1862) was a preacher-pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church and an author, publishing several works and poems. The son of a highly successful business merchant, Bethune studied theology at Princeton University. In 1827, he was appointed Pastor of his Dutch Reformed Church in New York, though he moved to several locations after his appointment. He was offered many positions during his life, including chaplaincy of the U.S. Military Academy, Chancellorship of New York University, and the Provostship of the University of Pennsylvania. He declined all of the offers. Bethune was an outspoken democrat who opposed slavery and enjoyed fishing, and would in anonymity, write for The Compleat Angler under a pseudonym. Surface creases. Corners worn and creased. Toned. Adhesive residue on verso. Faint stains on left and right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
