As Secretary of War (1849), he signs a document appointing Davis Tillson (a future Union officer) as a West Point Cadet.
Partly Printed Document signed in ink: "Geo. W. Crawford" as Secretary of War, 1 page, 10x8. U. S. War Office, 1849 June 30. Document number 10. Docketed on verso. In full: "The President of the United States having been pleased to appoint Davis Tillson a Cadet in the service of the United States, he is to be received as such, and entitled to all the consideration attached to said appointment." George W. Crawford (1798-1872) was Governor of Georgia (1843-1847) and Secretary of War (1849-1850). As Governor, Crawford pushed railroad construction and crafted legislation creating the Georgia Supreme Court. He made no great mark as Secretary of War. With the rest of the Cabinet, he resigned following the death President Zachary Taylor. In 1861, Crawford presided over the Georgia State Secession Convention, but retired from politics thereafter. He was the cousin of US Presidential candidate and Cabinet member William H. Crawford (1772-1834). Davis Tillson was obliged to resign from West Point after having his foot amputated. His military training was not wasted, however. He returned to uniform for the Civil War, commissioned a captain of the 2nd Maine and later commanding the Union I Corps Artillery at the Battle of Antietam. Fold creases. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
