Governor of South Carolina shown smiling into the camera, signed in ink accompanied by a typed letter regarding the photograph
Photograph Signed: "James B. Edwards" as Governor of South Carolina. B/w, 8x10. Slightly creased at blank margins and corners. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Overall, fine condition. Accompanied by TLS: "Robert G. Liming" as Director of Communications, 1p, 8½x11. Columbia, South Carolina, 1975 December 29. On letterhead of "State of South Carolina/James B. Edwards/Governor" to Mr. Danny Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. In full: "Governor Edwards appreciates your kind letter which is so very complimentary of his administration. I am pleased to send you an autographed picture of him. If I may be of further assistance, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely". Slightly creased. Fine condition. James Burrows Edwards (1927-2014) served as South Carolina's Governor from 1975-1979. Defeating William C. Westmoreland in 1974, he became the state's first Republican Governor since the end of Reconstruction. Edwards, who signed legislation reinstating the death penalty in 1977, had previously served in the state's Senate (1972-1975), and he would later serve as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy (1981-1982). Two items.
