HANS ALBRECHT BETHE - FIRST DAY COVER SIGNED - HFSID 285369

HANS BETHE
Signed First Day Cover honoring Senator Brien McMahon
First Day Cover signed: "Hans A. Bethe", 6½x3¾. FDC honoring Senator Brien McMahon, first chairman of the joint atomic energy committee, postmarked Norwalk, Connecticut, July 28, 1962, 4-cent stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Theoretical physicist Hans Bethe (1906-2005) left his native Germany when the Nazis took power in 1933, and joined the faculty of Cornell University in 1935. He became an American citizen in 1941. Bethe played a key role in the Manhattan Project as head of the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos. He also calculated the critical mass necessary for the atomic bombs built there. He also contributed (reluctantly) to development of the H-bomb, but campaigned in later years against the nuclear arms race and for the nuclear test ban and other arms control agreements. Bethe won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1967) for his work on stellar nucleosynthesis. Lightly toned. Slightly soiled with adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise fine condition.
