HANS DEHMELT. Photograph signed: "Hans" with diagram, possibly a symbolic representation of his last name. B/w, 4x5¾ overall, image 4x4¾ (one surface). A German-born (1922) physicist who became a U.S. citizen in 1961, Dehmelt of the University of Washington was co-recipient with Wolfgang Paul of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physics for development of the Penning trap, an electromagnetic device that can hold small numbers of ions and electrons for period long enough for them to be accurately studied. Dehmelt's studies caused physicists to revise their estimate of the size of an electron by a factor of 10,000! Ink note on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
