HERVEY ALLEN - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 02/08/1940 - HFSID 168517

HERVEY ALLEN. TLS: "Hervey Allen", 1p, 8¼x11. Coconut Grove, Florida, 1940 February 28. On his personal letterhead from "The Glades" to John Black, Esq., Long Island, New York. In full: "Your nice note of February 10th, with its enclosure of 'The Happy Man,' also a copy of 'Songs of the World's Fair and other poems,' have arrived. It is very nice indeed of you to remember me, and I have really read the Songs through with an interest in the work itself, aside from my knowing you. Here's a little quote if you want to use it: 'A fine, courageous American spirit informs these Songs of the World's Fair. They are the sensitive record of a deep experience.' Faithfully yours". American author Hervey Allen (1889-1949), born William Hervey Allen, is best known for his 1933 novel, Anthony Adverse, which was made into a feature film. A veteran of WWI, Allen began his literary career as a poet while recovering from being gassed while in combat. His best known poem, "The Blindman", was published in "North American Review" in 1919, but as Allen was becoming a major poet (1920), he retreated from his fame and almost entirely gave up writing poetry during the 1930s. His other noted works include a series of historical novels, The Disinherited, about Colonial America. He completed three volumes in the series, The Forest and the Fort (1943), Bedford Village (1944) and Toward the Morning (1948), and Allen also wrote Israfel (1926), a biography of Edgar Allan Poe. Lightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold at paraph. Two ¾-inch tears at upper blank margin. Fine condition.
