Photograph signed on verso: "Howard Cosell". B/w, 3¼x5. Cosell (1918-1995) first appeared on television in his own show, Sports Focus, a daily ABC sports commentary show televised from June 1957-September 1958. From 1961, he frequently appeared on ABC's Wide World of Sports. On September 21, 1970, NFL Monday Night Football premiered on ABC. Cosell, Keith Jackson and Don Meredith were the commentators. Cosell's outspoken defense of heavyweight boxing champ Muhammad Ali, stripped of his title for refusing military service, was vindicated by a unanimous Supreme Court ruling in Ali's favor. The "tell it like it is" style of the controversial Cosell changed sports reporting forever. Photo is ink stained from an item having been placed on top of it. Ink notes on verso at bottom right below signature (unknown hand).
