As Governor of West Virginia, he signs a handwritten 1925 letter, explaining that "the industrial disturbance ... and other pressing matters" leave him no time to write more.
Autograph Letter signed: "Howard M. Gore" as Governor, 2 pages, 6¾x9¾ conjoined. Charleston, West Virginia, 1925 June 16. On Executive Department letterhead to Mr. A. Barclay Ulman, New York, N. Y. In full: "Your letter of June 5th received and I appreciated hearing from you. Due to the industrial disturbance in northern West Virginia and the many pressing matters of importance requiring my personal attention, it is not possible for me to write you in detail at this time. With kindest regards and best wishes I am Sincerely". Howard Mason Gore (1887-1947) was Secretary of Agriculture under President Coolidge (1924-1925) before serving two terms as Governor of West Virginia (1925-1929). He was the state's Commissioner of Agriculture (1931-1933) and a long-time member of its Public Service Commission. The "industrial disturbance" referenced in this letter was a coal strike led by the United Mine Workers. Though his tenure as Secretary of Agriculture was brief, Gore appointed the Joint Board of Interstate Highways which developed the uniform national system of highway numbering, replacing a bewildering assortment of state road and "trail" designations. Horizontal fold crease. Pencil smears at upper margin of page1. Toned and lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
