HERMANN VEZIN
American actor, popular in England, taught public speaking to Oscar Wilde
Postcard Photograph signed: "Hermann Verzin". B/w, 3½x5¼. Hermann Verzin (1829-1910) spent most of his acting career in England, where he was on stage from the early 1850s, performing in Shakespearean as well as modern plays. He later toured the US, but his acting style proved less popular there. Vezin earned renown as a teacher of elocution, much in demand for his private lessons. He tutored his friend Oscar Wilde before the latter's lecture tour in the United States (1882). The Marquess of Queensberry - famed for his boxing rules and for his accusations against Wilde which led to the latter's ill-advised libel suit of 1895 - disrupted the premier of a London play (Tennyson's The Promise of May, 1894) by denouncing a performance by Vezin as a slur upon him. Minor surface scratches. Otherwise, fine condition.
