ASSOCIATE JUSTICE JAMES F. BYRNES - FIRST DAY COVER SIGNED CO-SIGNED BY: ASSOCIATE JUSTICE BYRON WHIZZER WHITE, ASSOCIATE JUSTICE SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR, ASSOCIATE JUSTICE OWEN J. ROBERTS, ASSOCIATE JUSTICE WILLIAM J. BRENNAN JR.
JAMES F. BYRNES, SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR, WILLIAM J. BRENNAN, JR., BYRON WHITE and OWEN J. ROBERTS
First Day Cover honoring the Supreme Court, signed by five Supreme Court Justices who were appointed under five different presidents.
First Day Cover signed: "James F Byrnes", "Owen J. Roberts", "Byron White", "Sandra D OConnor" and "Wm J Brennan Jr", 6½x3½, honoring the Judicial Branch of the U.S. government during the National Capital Sesquicentennial, 3¢ purple U.S. Supreme Court building stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., August 9, 1950, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Typed address at lower right margin. Democrat BYRNES (1882-1972) was U.S. Congressman (1911-1925) and Senator (1931-1941) from South Carolina and before serving for ten months as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1941-1942). Byrnes later served as Truman's Secretary of State (1945-1947), attending United Nations meetings in London (January 7-25, 1946) and in Lake Success, New York, and as Governor of South Carolina (1951-1955). O'CONNOR (born in 1930), nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan, took her seat as an Associate Justice in September 1981, becoming the first woman on the Court, she retired in 2006. BRENNAN (1906-1997), appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, served as Associate Justice from 1956-1990. Former football star WHITE (1917-2002) was appointed to the Court by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, serving until his retirement in 1993. A conservative voice on the Court, he was known for his dissenting opinion in the Roe v. Wade case in 1973. ROBERTS (1875-1855), appointed by President Herbert Hoover, was an Associate Justice from 1930-1945. Lightly toned. The "nnor" of O'Connor's signature touches postmark, the "J" in Brennan's signature touches 1 letter of typed address. Otherwise in fine condition.
