RENATO DULBECCO - TYPED LETTER SIGNED
RENATO DULBECCO
Letter accepting congratulations on his receipt of the Nobel Prize
Typed Letter signed: "R. Dulbecco", 1p, 6x4. Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories, London, [1975]. To "Dear Professor Gilde". In full: "I greatly appreciate your message. In receiving this prize I wish to express my gratitude to the many people who worked with me. I am sorry that I have to reply in such a formal way at this time." Renato Dulbecco (1914-2012) received a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1975 for his role in drawing a link between genetic mutations and cancer. In proving this connection, Dulbecco, along with his former student Howard Temin and separate research by David Baltimore, changed the way scientists thought about cancer and the effects of carcinogens. In 1986, Dulbecco proposed cataloguing all human genes, an impetus for the Human Genome Project completed in 2003. Although he became a US citizen in 1953, Dulbecco, who had done his prize-winning research at Cal Tech and later presided over the Salk Institute, returned in his later years to the staff of the National Research Council in his native Italy. Slightly soiled at top left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
