Very Rare! Autograph Sentiment signed as "L. P. di Cesnola"
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Truly Yours/L. P. diCesnola", 4x2½ card. Italian-born Luigi Palma di Cesnola (1832-1904), a veteran of European wars including the Crimean War, came to the US to teach languages, and very soon after joined the Union Army as a cavalry officer, rising to the rank of brevet brigadier general. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his conduct during the Battle of Aldie (June 1863), in which he was severely wounded and taken prisoner. Released from Libby Prison in 1864, he rejoined the Army of the Potomac in time to take part in the Battles of The Wilderness and Petersburg. Appointed US Consul in Larnaca, Cyprus (then part of the Ottoman Empire), from 1865 to 1877 he undertook amateur archaeological projects and wrote a book about his discoveries. While in the US he went by the name of Louis. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
