SAMUEL CLEMENS (MARK TWAIN)
On a lecture tour of London (1873), signs a short ALS inviting friend Henry Lee to dinner, but warning, "No - don't write Paris till we see you again."
Autograph Letter signed: "Clemens", 1 page, 4¾3 post card. Undated, but postmarked London, September 26, 1873. To Henry Lee, in full: " No - don't write Paris till we see you again. We'll be down by the 11.10 Victoria Sunday. You must dine with us that evening here." Samuel Clemens (1835-1910), who wrote under the pen name Mark Twain, was a steamboat pilot, journalist, world traveler and renowned lecturer. Above all, he was a skillful essayist and novelist whose lasting contributions to American literature include Tom Sawyer (1875), Huckleberry Finn (1885) and A Connecticut Yankee At King Arthur's Court (1889). Clemens had been warmly received on his first visit to London in 1872. Henry Lee, naturalist of the Brighton Aquarium, had served then as his informal host, showing Clemens around the city and environs. Clemens returned with wife Olivia and baby daughter Susy, for a successful series of 7 lectures in 1873. The nature of the proposed business in Paris is unknown. Soiled. Corners slightly creased. Ink and pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise fine condition.
