ALBERT EINSTEIN - DOCUMENT SIGNED CIRCA 1922 CO-SIGNED BY: HENRI L. BERGSON, GILBERT MURRAY, GEORGE E. HALE, KRISTINE BONNEVIE
INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE ON INTELLECTUAL COOPERATION: ALBERT EINSTEIN, HENRI BERGSON, GEORGE E. HALE, KRISTINE BONNEVIE, GILBERT MURRAY and OTHERS
Eleven leading scholars and scientists sign an attendance roster.
Manuscript Document signed: "A. Einstein", "H. Bergson", "George E. Hale", "Gilbert Murray", "Kristine Bonnevie, "D. N. Bannerjea", "F. Ruffini" and four other undeciphered signatures, 1 page, 7¼x10½. Under handwritten heading, First Committee on Intellectual Cooperation, it is apparently an attendance sheet removed from a notebook, individually signed by the participants. The International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation was established by the League of Nations at Geneva in 1922. It was a forerunner of UNESCO, the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, founded in 1946. The brainpower present at this meeting was impressive. EINSTEIN (1879-1955), already famous for his theory of relativity (1905), was a founding member of the ICIC. He resigned in 1923 to protest French occupation of the Ruhr region of Germany, but rejoined the Committee soon thereafter. BERGSON (1859-1941) a French philosopher who emphasized the importance of intuition in human thought, was a principal organizer of the Committee. He later received the Nobel Prize in Literature (1927). HALE (1868-1938) was an American astronomer who invented the spectroheliograph, a device for studying the prominences of the Sun in full daylight. BONNEVIE (1872-1948) was a zoologist and Norway's first female professor. A pioneer researcher on genetics and inheritance, she was also a member of Norway's delegation to the first five sessions of the League of Nations. MURRAY (1866-1957) was an English professor of Greek, who translated many classical Greek writings. Biologist BONNEVIE (1872-1948) was the first female member of Norway's Academy of Science and Letters. American solar astronomer HALE discovered solar vortices and magnetic fields of sunspots. This document merits further research. Lightly creased. Ink from a name written on the next page shows through slightly, touching the "E" and "H" in Hale's signature. Stray pen mark on right side not near signatures. Otherwise, fine condition.
