[GEORGE WASHINGTON; SAMUEL WEST]
Unsigned pamphlet containing the sermon of Pastor Samuel West of Boston, following the death of the first US President in 1799
Pamphlet unsigned, 40 pages, 5x8. "Greatness the Result of Goodness", a sermon by Samuel West, D. D., Pastor of the Church in Hollis Street, Boston, occasioned by the death of George Washington. Boston: Printing Office of Manning & Loring, 1799. After strenuous outdoor activity in foul weather, GEORGE WASHINGTON retired to his bed and died on December 12, 1799. Although Washington had requested a quiet funeral, the nation was determined to honor the Revolutionary hero and first President with elaborate nationwide ceremonies. An elaborate funeral was held at Mount Vernon on December 18. On December 26 in Philadelphia, then the nation's capital, Congressman and former military commander Light-Horse Harry Lee delivered a funeral oration at an elaborate ceremony which would set a pattern for observances in other cities. Between that date and February 22, 1800, set aside as a national day of mourning, mock funerals and church sermons throughout America eulogized President Washington. Reverend SAMUEL WEST (1738-1808), Pastor of the Hollis Street Church in Boston, was well suited for delivering one of these benedictory sermons. West had been a Chaplain in the Continental Army, and had even served General Washington as a cryptographer, deciphering a coded letter proving that Dr. Benjamin Church of Boston was actually a British spy. On May 19, 1776, West had delivered a fiery pro-independence sermon, "On the Right to Rebel Against Governers," which was printed and circulated throughout the colonies and which prompted King George III to offer a reward for the killing or capture of West. West had also been a delegate to the Massachusetts convention which ratified the Constitution. Toned and stained on front cover with spots bleeding through first 6 pages. Missing back cover. Last page not attached. All edges and corners worn. Pencil note (unknown hand) on back page.
