EBENEZER GAY
Ebenezer Gay, one of the founders of American Unitarianism, wrote this short document in 1738, asking the recipient to put money in his account.
Autograph document signed "Ebenr Gay". Black ink notations on verso in unknown hand. 1 page, 7¼x2½. Jan. 9, 1738. Addressed to Mr. Thomas Andrews. In full: " I desire you to pay to Mr. Cornelius Nye the sum of three pounds twelve shillings, and three pence, and place it to my account." Gay (1696-1787) was an American clergyman and one of the founders of American Unitarianism. Ordained in 1718, he became the pastor of the church in Hingham, Massachusetts, a position he held just shy of sixty years and where gained a reputation for scholarship. He was an early proponent of Arminianism, an 18th Century version of religious liberalism in America, and of "supernatural rationalism", which insisted that the Bible and science were compatible with each other. Gay advanced these ideas, not through attacks on the prevailing Calvinism of the times and its doctrines like election to grace and original sin, but by omitting any mention of these ideas in his preaching. Light show-through from notations and adhesive residue on verso, which touches signature and handwriting. Lightly soiled. Irregular edges. Otherwise in fine condition.
