BENJAMIN HARRISON
Presidential congratulations to the Russian Czar on the birth of his cousin's daughter, who later became Abbess of the Russian Orthodox Convent of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.
Partly Printed Presidential Warrant signed: "Benj Harrison" as 23rd U.S. President, 1p, 8x10. Washington, 1890 May 12. In full: "I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State [Thomas Francis Bayard] to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to envelope containing my letter addressed to His Majesty Alexander III Emperor of Russia, on the birth of a daughter of the Grand Duchess Mavrikievna Consort of his cousin the Grand Duke Constantinovich." ALEXANDER III was Emperor (Czar) of Russia from 1881-1894. The fathers of Grand Duke Constanine Constantinovich (1858-1915) and Czar Alexander III were brothers. General of the Infantry in the Russian Army, Constanine Constantinovich and Elisaveta Mavrikievna (1865-1927), second daughter of Prince Moritz of Saxe-Altenburg, Duke of Saxony, were married in 1884. Princess TATIANA CONSTANTINOVA was born at St. Petersburg on January 11, 1890. She renounced her rights of succession to the Russian throne at the time of her marriage in 1911 to Prince Constantine, a descendant of the Kings of Georgia. He was killed in action in World War I in 1915. In 1921, she married Alexander Korochentsov (1877-1922). He died three months later. In 1946, she took the veil and became Mother Tamara, Abbess of the Russian Orthodox Convent of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, dying there on August 28, 1979. Lightly creased, else fine condition.
