Herb Caen writes a note to Hildegarde after a performance
Autograph Note signed: " Herb Caen", 1p 8¾x4, cut from a larger album sheet. In full: "Greetings to Nobhildegarde-You leave me speechless! ". Herb Caen (1916-1997) began his "It's News to Me" column in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1938, writing it six days a week for nearly sixty years. (He wrote for the San Francisco Examiner from 1950 to1958.) In 1996, he received a Pulitzer Prize in Journalism "for his extraordinary and continuing contribution as a voice and conscience of his city." His books included Baghdad-On-The-Bay (1949) and One Man's San Francisco (1976). HILDEGARDE (born in 1906) popularly known as "the incomparable Hildegarde" was a classically trained pianist who played in vaudeville from 1926. She emerged as a popular singer in the 1930s and 1940s with hits that included "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup", "The Last Time I Saw Paris" and "I'll Be Seeing You." Hildegarde performed to great acclaim in nightclubs until age 89. Toned at lightly creased. Ink notes (unknown hands) on front and verso from other fans. Otherwise, fine condition.
