FRANK KELLY FREAS
He signs an Alfred E. Neuman cartoon, adding "What, me worry?" in his own hand.
Printed Art signed in ink: "What, me/worry?/Kelly Freas", 8½x11. Frank Kelly Freas (1922-2005) was called "the dean of science fiction artists." After painting pin-ups on Army Air Force bombers during World War II, Freas began illustrating science fiction books and magazine covers in 1950. He won his first Hugo Award in 1955, and became the first person to win ten of the coveted awards in 1976. (In 2001, he received another "retro Hugo" for the year 1951. Freas illustrated the works of most of the great science fiction authors, including Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke and Pohl. Two collections of his SF art were published. Freas also designed dozens of MAD magazine covers (most featuring "Alfred E. Neuman, as shown here). He was commissioned by NASA to design the mission patch and posters for the Skylab I mission, work which now hangs I the Smithsonian. He also drew a series of 500 saints for the Franciscan Order. Lightly toned. Soiled lower right. Creased and worn at corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
