BUCK OWENS. FDC signed: "Buck/Owens", 6½x3¾. FDC picturing "Drummer/Communications in Colonial Times", 8-cent Rise of the Spirit of Independence stamp affixed, postmarked New Orleans, LA, September 28, 1973, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Buck Owens (1929-2006), born Alvis Edgar Owens, is credited with developing the "Bakersfield sound", bringing rock-influenced country music to hardcore honky tonk. The first successful country music star to come out of Bakersfield, California, Owens formed The Buckaroos in 1963, with Merle Haggard among his first bassists. Owens had 15 consecutive #1 hits in the mid-1960s, including "Act Naturally", "Love's Gonna Live Here" (his biggest seller), "My Heart Skips a Beat" and "I've Got a Tiger By the Tail". After becoming a television personality, first on Buck Owens' Ranch (1966-1973) and then on Hee Haw (1969-1971 on CBS; in syndication until 1986), he had another #1 hit in 1988, teaming up with Dwight Yoakum on a remake of his 1972 song, "Streets of Bakersfield". Slightly rippled at cachet. Fine condition.
