On letterhead of "State of New Mexico/Office of the Governor" to Mr. Danny Franklin, Sunnyslope, Arizona. In full: "Thank you for your wonderful letter of October 26. I am enclosing the photos of Mrs. Cargo and myself which you requested. I am most pleased and flattered to add to your collection. Enclosed also, is information from my present campaign. Best wishes for your continued good health and success. Sincerely". Enclosures not present. Slightly creased. Stray ink marks at lower right margin and above typed "Sincerely". Fine condition. Accompanied by photocopied biography, unsigned, 1p, 8½x11. Lightly creased. Light type transference above one line. Staple holes at upper left corner. Overall, fine condition. David Francis Cargo (born in 1929) was the Governor of New Mexico from 1967-1971. A liberal Republican, he was known as "Lonesome Dave" during his first campaign, but Cargo was responsible for creating the state's film commission. Asked to appear in several films, he had a role as a "State Trooper" in 1971's Bunny O'Hare, which starred Bette Davis and Ernest Borgnine. Cargo, who had previously served in the New Mexico House of Representatives (1962-1967), made unsuccessful bids for U.S. Senator in 1970 and 1972, and he was an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Representative from New Mexico in 1986. After relocating to Oregon with his family from 1973-1985, Cargo returned to Albuquerque, where he practiced law. Two items.
