FREDERICK O'NEAL. TLS: "Fred'k ONeal" as President of the Associated Actors and Artistes of America, 1p, 8½x11. New York, 1984 August 30. On union letterhead to Mr. Todd M. Axelrod, Las Vegas, Nevada. In full: "In responding to your letter of July 27, I wish to say that a somewhat brief recap of my career would span the period between 1927 to 1972. In 1927 I organized a non-professional group, the Aldridge Players in St. Louis, Missouri. And, in 1940, together with several others, I organized The American Negro Theatre in New York City. The professional period of my career began in 1944 with the Broadway opening of 'Anna Lucasta,' first produced by The American Negro Theatre. Since that time, I have appeared in a number of productions on the stage, screen and television. I can't say just which role was most important. In 1964, I was elected president of the Actors Equity Association succeeding Ralph Bellamy, and in 1970, following the death of Conrad Nagel, I succeeded him as president of the international union, Associated Actors and Artistes of America. I was president of both organizations from 1970 to 1973. I had not intended to assume the two offices so when my third three-year term was up at Actors Equity, I decided that heading the two organizations was too much. I was succeeded by Theodore Bikel. I am still president of the international union, Associated Actors and Artistes of America, commonly known at the 4A's. Our nine affiliates are listed on this letterhead. I am also a vice president of AFL-CIO, having been elected to that office in 1969. I have not worked in the profession for the last ten or twelve years due to lack of time. I should say with the exception of a voice-over on television since that only requires about two hours. I miss working actively in the profession, however, time with the union makes it impossible to do so." The American Negro Theater in New York City, co-founded by O'Neal (1905-1992), produced 18 plays starring Black actors including Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. O'Neal appeared in Anna Lucasta on the Broadway stage (August 30, 1944-November 30, 1946) and in film (1958). Lightly creased at upper blank edge. File nick at left edge. Fine condition.
