GENERAL HARRY H. VAUGHAN
Harry H. Vaughan, military aide to President Harry S. Truman, signed this postwar letter on White House stationery in 1945 to arrange a meeting with a friend.
Typed letter signed "Harry" as a brigadier general in the U. S. Army and Military Aide to the President. Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. 1 page, 6¼x9¼, on White House stationery. Sept. 7, 1945. Addressed to Major Joe F. Major, Fort Francis E. Warren, Wyoming. In full: "Dear Joe: I expect to be in town until about the 26th of September and would be delighted to see you any time between now and then. Sincerely,". Vaughan (1893-1981) was a personal friend of Harry S. Truman since 1917, serving with him in World War I and in the Field Artillery Officers Reserve Corps. Treasurer for Senator Truman's 1940 reelection campaign committee, he became secretary to Senator Truman in 1941 and a liaison officer for the Truman Committee in 1944. General Vaughan was Military Aide to Truman when he was Vice President and President (1945-1953). Considered to be greatest embarrassment to the Truman administration, Vaughan was investigated by the Hoey Committee for what was referred to as the Five Percenters - men who were paid 5 percent of government contracts secured through their influence with officials. Vaughan was never charged with a crime. Lightly toned and creased. Signature has bled lightly but is legible. Random ink stains. Folded in half vertically and twice horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
