FRANCIS X. BUSHMAN - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 08/29/1916 - DOCUMENT 100611

FRANCIS X. BUSHMAN. TLS: "Francis X. Bushman", 1p, 7¾x10½. Riderwood, Green Spring Valley, Maryland, 1916 August 29. On his personal letterhead, picturing his estate, "Bushmanor", at upper left, to Miss Louise Albright, Allentown, Pennsylvania. Begins: "My dear friend". In full: "Received your kind letter this morning, as I happened to be a Bushmanor for a little rest, after my hard work on my new picture 'Romeo and Juliet' which has just been completed. I am truly sorry that you will not be able to attend the Motion Picture Theatres, for I would like very much to have had you go to see my above production. However, never mind, you will see some of my later ones, I hope, and then, if you remain away from the picture houses for a little time now, you avoid all danger. So you see everything happens for the best. You write me when you can, With best wishes, I am, as ever Thy friend." Romeo and Juliet, which starred Bushman as Romeo, was released in 1916, the year the screen idol also appeared in A Virginia Romance, In the Diplomatic Service, A Million a Minute, The Wall Between, The Red Mouse and Man and His Soul. Bushmanor was the actor's 280-acre estate in Green Spring Valley, which was cared for by eight house servants and 20 groundskeepers. A former sculptor's model, Francis Xavier Bushman (1883-1966) had a beautiful physique which, combined with his handsome looks, propelled him to stardom in pre-20s silents. Known as "the handsomest man in the world" and the first film actor to be called "King of the Movies", he starred in 115 silent films between 1911 and 1914. Bushman made more than a million dollars a year during the silent era, but lost his fortune in the Crash of 1929. After 1930, he appeared in feature films sporadically, but became a star of radio soap operas. Bushman, who later appeared in David and Bathsheba (1951), Sabrina (1954), The Story of Mankind (1957) and Twelve to the Moon (1960), made his last film, The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini, in 1966, the year of his death. Usual folds, vertical folds touch the "r" in Francis and the "Bu" of Bushman. Fine condition.
