NORMAN ANGELL
Angell hand-addressed this envelope from the Hotel Graham in Bloomington, Indiana to a Mrs. Wainwright of Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1932 - the year after he was knighted and before he received the Nobel Peace Prize.
Autograph envelope unsigned. 6½x3. With cachet of the Hotel Graham in Bloomington, Indiana, purple 3-cent George Washington stamp affixed, postmarked "Chi" (possibly Chicago, Illinois), November 18, 1932. Addressed to "Mrs. Wainwright/912 Clay Avenue/Scranton/Pa." This envelope was addressed the year Angell was knighted and the year before he received the Nobel Price for Peace. Angell maintained a fairly sizable correspondence with this unidentified "Mrs. Wainwright", who would often open her home to him when he was in the Scranton, Pennsylvania area. In 1910, British journalist Angell (1872-1967, born Ralph Norman Angell-Lane in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England) rose to fame with The Great Illusion, in which he reasoned that the common economic interests of nations make war futile. Knighted in 1931, Angell was awarded the 1933 Nobel Peace Prize. He also invented the Money Game, which were card games designed to teach its players about currency and credit. He continued to write and lecture into the 1950s. Lightly toned, creased and soiled. Torn open at upper edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
