SANDY KOUFAX and DON DRYSDALE
Dodgers' dynamic duo.
Baseball signed: "Sandy Koufax" and "Don Drysdale". William D. White, president National League baseball signed on the sweet-spot by Koufax and, right beneath the stitching, by Drysdale. In 1966, KOUFAX and DRYSDALE set a precedent by using a lawyer in their contract negotiations. The two future Hall of Famers, teammates on the Dodgers since 1956, held out together, refusing to sign until both received pacts they thought they deserved. At the end of spring training, in which neither participated, they finally agreed to terms: Koufax signed for $125,000, Drysdale for $110,000. KOUFAX, a career Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodger, conquered early wildness to become arguably the best pitcher in baseball history in his six final years. Between 1961 and 1966, he led the NL in wins and shutouts three times each, complete games twice, and strikeouts four times. His 382 strikeouts in 1965 set a new ML record. He led in ERA a record five consecutive years, with his best mark 1.73 in his final year. He pitched a no-hitter each season from 1962 to 1965. In 1971 he became the youngest player ever elected to the Hall of Fame. DRYSDALE, who died in 1993, was also a career Dodger (1956-1968), forming with Koufax one of the best pitching duos ever. An 8-time All-Star, he led the league in wins in 1962 and threw six consecutive shutouts in 1968. Fear was a major weapon in Drysdale's arsenal. He hit more batters than any pitcher in the 20th century. An announcer after his playing days, "Big D" entered the Hall of Fame in 1984. Between 1959 and 1966, the Dodgers won four pennants and three World Series without scoring many runs. With these guys on the mound, they didn't need many. Faint nail head sized spot just below Drysdale's signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
