ROCKY MARCIANO. Scarce ALS: "Rocky" as World Heavyweight Champion, 2p, 8x10½, front and verso. On stationery of The Grossinger Hotel & Country Club, Grossinger, N.Y. No date, but probably summer of 1954. To his wife, Barbara. In full: "Hope everythings (sic) going OK for you and Mary Anne till I get home cause Im (sic) really going to do nice things for her when I get there. I'll bet you can't get enough of Mary Anne after being away from her so long you know I feel the same way. I always think that if I were at home with her I would hate to leave again. It really is going to be hard for us to leave her when we go to Europe after this fight. I've spoken to Al [Al Weill, his manager] & he said you could go cause you've been such a good girl and are causing me no trouble expecially (sic) this one. You know how bad I want this one so honey keep up the good work and keep me relaxed for this one cause it will pay off expecially (sic) to you & Mary Anne. They tell me your (sic) always down at the new house. I'm so glad you like it cause anything you need just let me know and we'll get it. Honey here's fifty for now try to budget it for a while. I know it (sic) not much but show me you can handle it, if I find you know how to take care of money don't you think I couldn't give you a bank account. I would but gee you seem to don't even care at least that's the way it look to me so Babe I'll send you some more when I think you'll need it OK. Take care. See you pretty soon. When are you moving in." This undated letter was probably written in the summer of 1954 while ROCKY MARCIANO was in training at Grossinger's for the September 1954 rematch with former champ Ezzard Charles. His daughter, MARY ANNE, had been born on December 6, 1952, 11 weeks after Rocky had won the title. In June, Marciano had won a 15-round decision, the only time he had ever gone 15 rounds with a fighter. Everett M. Skehan in Rocky Marciano, Biography of a First Son writes that "Rocky was unhappy because the fight had gone the full fifteen rounds. He was convinced he could knock out Charles, and not only craved the KO, but envisioned one that would impress the entire boxing world." Rocky's manager, AL WEILL, delayed Marciano's marriage. He would say (according to Skehan), "Not yet. Be patient. Fighters' wives hurt fighters. I want you and Barbara should get married, but I'll tell you when it's time." Weill finally told Rocky, "Have one more fight. Then you can get married." Rocky demolished Bill Wilson (6 foot 2 inches, 229 pounds) in the first round on December 18, 1950, and married BARBARA on December 31st. Even though they were married, if Weill said Barbara couldn't go with Rocky to Europe, Barbara wouldn't have gone. Lightly creased. Some show through. Folds, vertical fold though the "o" of Rocky. Overall, fine condition.
